It is always exciting when a newborn baby is about to come home. Normally for firstborns, this is the most-awaited event of the couple and the entire family. But then comes another baby and the firstborn toddler would have to transition from apple-of-the-eye of everybody, to a big brother or sister to the new baby.A good way to prepare your toddler is to introduce him/her to your unborn baby. Explain to him/her that inside mommy’s bulging tummy is a tiny baby boy or girl that big brother or sister can play with.

Toddlers may find it difficult to understand this situation because they’ve always been the star of the family and being used to it could become more challenging for everyone. Some pregnant mom’s would introduce their toddlers to their unborn babies even months before they start to bulge. This way, their toddlers would start to develop anticipation and gradual acceptance of what will happen in the coming months and until the baby is born. You should always make your little one feel special so he/she won’t feel left out during the course of mom’s pregnancy.

Always include him/her in the preparations such as in choosing the baby’s clothes, crib, nursery items and toys. And tell him/her that the baby will need a loving and helpful big brother/sister once he/she is born. It is also essential to get all the help and support from your family and relatives. Tell them to make big brother/sister special by treating him/her the same way as before. Their encouragement will also matter before and after the baby is born so that your toddler will realize that whether there is a new baby or not, he/she will still matter to everyone.

Some moms would recommend putting a responsibility on big brother/sister so that he/she will feel that the baby is as special as him/her. Telling your toddler that taking care of the baby is important and as a big brother/sister, it is his/her responsibility to make sure that the baby is safe and taken care of when he/she is born.Normally, there are setbacks especially when a toddler reacts differently and negatively towards the baby even though you have prepared him/her for it. The key is patience and more patience because you need to take care of two young children and make sure that they get along.

Other family members can take turns in taking care of your newborn while you spend time with your toddler. And since the baby usually sleeps all day, you can teach your toddler to accept and care for the baby. Taking your toddler out on a picnic or a day at the park is a great way to bond with your toddler. If you can’t go out just yet, you can ask other family members or relatives to take your toddler out for a stroll. It is nice to give some time-out to yourself and to your toddler after a weeklong caring for the baby.

No one really knows how a toddler will react on the arrival of his/her newborn brother or sister. Making your toddler understand that the next couple of weeks are crucial for everyone and his/her help will make a difference.
